Wildlife at Airds
See red kites, buzzards, woodpeckers & owls!

Airds glen is an excellent venue for birdwatching. Many species visit and inhabit the six acres of woodland and rough heath (shown left). A small field of un-improved pasture (i.e. grassland not having been treated with fertiliser, herbicides etc.) also lies to the east of the glen.

A frequent and much loved visitor to the bird-table outside our breakfast room is the greater spotted woodpecker and blue tits, coal tits, great tits and many other popular garden birds are continually present. Barn tawny and short-eared owls nest in buidings around the farm and can be heard, and sometimes seen, hunting at night.

Red squirrels are not frequently seen, but the photograph above catches one of them thieving nuts from the bird table outside our breakfast room.

Above is a photo of a tawny owl seen in one of the barns at Airds Farm. Red kites, a spectacular sight, are also often seen. See our page on the Red Kite Trail
