James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh in 1831, son of John Clerk Maxwell, an advocate and landowner in Galloway.

The Maxwell family estate was at Glenlair, some way north of Parton. Maxwell is known to have enjoyed his life in Galloway, and returned continually to the estate. He is buried in Parton churchyard, within the ruins of the old kirk.
