Old Crossmichael

With the co-operation of some of our visitors we have scanned some old photographs taken in the area around the 1920s or so.   If you have any interest in the local history of the area, or have any archive material yourself, please contact us.

A selection of shots of the village and nearby locations follow:-

Crossmichael station on the so called "Port Road" to Portpatrick

Crossmichael Station looking towards Castle Douglas.   The Portpatrick Railway opened in the 1850s and survived for just a hundred years, steam hauled to the last.  The railwaymen referred to Crossmichael as "Angry Mick".   The station building still survives as a private house.   The signal box, although glassless and derelict survived otherwise intact, its roof almost as good as the day it was built, until 2001 when it was totally destroyed by a fire, maliciously started.
